In Chinese, the word for orange sounds close enough to the word for auspicious that the fruit became a symbol of luck. 橘色 (橘色, jú sè): 橘 is the fruit, 色 is colour. Orange colour. Swap 色 for 子 and 橘子 (jú zǐ) is orange the fruit. Some families in Taiwan grow a miniature orange plant at New Year purely for luck, not to eat. Others just keep buying oranges until the season ends. Josh Edbrooke was eating them in Taipei when he found out why.
