In Chinese, the word for orange sounds close enough to the word for auspicious that the fruit became a symbol of luck. 橘色 (橘色, jú sè): 橘 is the fruit, 色 is colour. Orange colour. Swap 色 for 子 and 橘子 (jú zǐ) is orange the fruit. Some families in Taiwan grow a miniature orange plant at New Year purely for luck, not to eat. Others just keep buying oranges until the season ends.
