Description
Today’s National Shooting Sports Month video features the Alchemy Arms SPECTRE… probably the rarest production gun in my collection.
The 10+1 .45acp Spectre was intended to give people the best of both worlds… if you are some of the people who think 1911s are just about perfect, but wish they had Glock internals. Arguably, that’s a small group of people… and I understand that less than 200 of these guns ever shipped.
While I appreciate the pistol as a piece of history and an engineering experiment, it’s not a great firearm. The trigger on my example is tragically bad… in fact, if you don’t put pressure specially on the top portion of the trigger, it won’t fire. The safety lever is “soft”… with no specific transition point from safe to off. The shape of the gun makes it difficult to ensure that the gritty is disengaged.
Redundant safeties were a big deal with the company, and the pistol even features a cylinder key lock integrated into the firing mechanism. Interestingly for the time, however, they did not integrate a magazine disconnect safety. The company had plans to release the gun in 9mm, .40S&W and possibly even 10mm, but I don’t believe any caliber but .45 were shipped.
Do you own any guns that you don’t really like, but keep for collector or sentimental reasons?
