The phrase she reached for most, in every situation she could not navigate, was not hello or thank you. It was 我不知道 (wǒ bù zhī dào): I don't know. 知道 (zhī dào) is to know: 知 (zhī) is knowledge and 道 (dào) is the path, the way. In Chinese, knowing something is not just holding a fact. It is knowing the way it travels. Add 不 (bù) and the phrase flips. Remove 不 and 我知道 (wǒ zhī dào) is I know, the phrase Astrid is working towards saying far more often as her Chinese grows.
