Gaumont Multimédia was founded in Paris, France, by Marc du Pontavice in March 1995 to produce cartoons, video games and internet content. This occurred while Gaumont Télévision, co-founded by Marc in 1990, had great success with Highlander: The Animated Series (1994-96), their first animated production. Less than a year after Gaumont Multimédia was founded, they produced their first series during the first half of 1996, that being an animated series of Sky Dancers. More animated series followed as the twentieth century drew to a close, some of which were so popular that they continued to last in the new millennium. Some examples include Space Goofs and Oggy and the Cockroaches, the latter being Gaumont Multimédia's and Xilam's most famous series. Not many video games were published Gaumont Multimédia; the only ones I could find were Les Visiteurs: Le Jeu (1998), The Fifth Element (1998) and Les Visiteurs: La relique de Sainte Rolande (2001). The last game was released after Gaumont Multimédia left the animation scene in January 2000, and this division of Gaumont became dormant by 2004.
Xilam Animation was founded by Marc du Pontavice and his wife Alix de Maistre in August 1999, some eight months after Marc left Gaumont Multimédia in December 1998. In January 2000, the French animation studio and Igel Media, a German trading company, acquired Gaumont Multimédia's animation library, most of which were episodes from Space Goofs and Oggy and the Cockroaches; note the plastered variants from said series in their 2nd and 4th on-screen logos (q.v. timestamps below).
The logo with the memorable whistling and piano jingle first debuted on the video game Stupid Invaders on 15th December 2000, originally for PC and had a Dreamcast port on 18th May 2001. An updated version of this intro and outro first appeared on The New Adventures of Lucky Luke (2001-03) on 16th September 2001, where the painted X letter is part of the Xilam wordmark. This animation has appeared on the majority of Xilam's output, including their first animated feature film Kaena: The Prophecy in 2003. Other appearances include the second season of Space Goofs (2005-06), Shuriken School (2006-07), A Kind of Magic (2008-18), seasons 3-8 of Oggy (2008-22), Zig and Sharko (2010-24), etc.
Xilam Animation has worked on a few movies since 2003, and one of these was I Lost My Body (2019) which won several categories at various French and American film festivals. At the turn of the 2010s, Xilam acquired the majority of Cube Creative, a French company that specialises in CGI production. Xilam was ranked as France's leading animation studio during the 2018-23 period, according to a report by the French National Centre of Cinema (CNC) (source: Presentation webpage on Xilam animation website, last accessed 14.03.2026), and the animation studio released Chip 'n' Dale: Park Life (2021-24), Oggy Oggy (2021-22), Pfffirates (2022) and the fifth season of Kaeloo (2023) during that time. A ninth season of Oggy and the Cockroaches was announced by Xilam during the making of this video compilation in early March 2026.
