United International Pictures (UIP) was formed in 1981 as a joint venture of Universal Pictures and Paramount Pictures. The predecessor of UIP was Cinema International Corporation (CIC), founded in 1970 with the same intent as UIP, that being to distribute the films by Universal and Paramount worldwide. CIC began to distribute MGM's films internationally in 1973 as the latter had closed down their distribution offices earlier that year. MGM acquired United Artists and formed a joint venture with them in 1981, but UA had their own international division and was not part of CIC. As the year went to a close, CIC decided to merge themselves with UA's international division to form United International Pictures on 1st November 1981.
Based in London, England (UK), UIP has 'distributed over 1,000 films under license around the world' as written on their website, and a 'global directory' tab features all the countries they operate in, some examples including Denmark, South Africa, Uruguay, Indonesia and Thailand. UIP globally distributed films by Dreamworks Pictures from 1997-2005, and MGM left UIP around the time the latter's recent print logo was introduced in late 2000.
The turn of the last century nearly saw Universal Pictures leave UIP in 1999, when the former distributed their own films internationally after acquiring PolyGram Filmed Entertainment's international distribution assets. However, this venture was short-lived and they folded Universal Pictures International into UIP in the same year!
In 2007, there was a major change to UIP as Paramount would independently distribute their films in Australia, Brazil, France, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand and the UK, whilst Universal distributed their films in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain and Switzerland from that year onwards.
UIP has also distributed several local production films, perhaps the most recent example being 'Casa muerta' from 2023, an Argentine-Uruguayan romantic comedy film. They also have distributed films from locally owned distribution companies, one of which being the Czech film company Bontonfilm; note the in-credit text plastering the 'United International Pictures' text in 1997 and 2000.
