Ellipsanime is a French animation studio that was founded in Paris by Philippe Gildas and Robert Réa in 1987, and they were owned by Canal+ until 2000. The company was known as Le Studio Ellipse in France during this time, and it was not until 1990 when Ellipse entered the animation industry, which was when they became known as Ellipse Programme. Shortly after the New Year arrived, Ellipse co-produced the American Western superhero series 'Zorro', which they co-produced with other names such as New World Television for example. They later collaborated with Nelvana on The Adventures of Tintin (1991-92) and with Jumbo Pictures and Nickelodeon on seasons 2-4 of Doug (1992-94).
Interestingly, Ellipse Programme was co-producing game shows in France while they continued doing more animation shows such as Blazing Dragons (1996-98), by which time they renamed their animation division to Ellipse Animation. However, this was replaced with Ellipse Programme merging two of their animation production subsidiaries (Alya Animation and Elma Animation) and production facility (Studio Ellipse) to form Ellipsanime Productions in 1997. The first few shows to reflect this change were Fennec and Bob Morane, and the Ellipse Programme name continued to appear on game shows until the turn of the Nineties.
The first on-screen logo from Ellipsanime is in keeping with the concurrent Canal+ ident (1995-2003), and it continued to be used after Expand SA acquired Ellipsanime Productions in 2000. This appeared on several animated shows like the sixth season of Babar (2001) and the animated film Becassine and the Viking Treasure (2001). A year after Expand sold Ellipsanime to Dargaud in 2003, the studio replaced their logo with the current one that has been in use for two decades, making its earliest known appearance on Pirate Family (2004). Ellipsanime contributed to the 2007 revival of The Magic Roundabout and worked on seasons 3-4 of Yakari (2012 and '16 respectively).
Ellipse Animation was founded in June 2022 as an entertainment group and animation production studio, also based in Paris, France. Since then, Ellipsanime has become an animation subsidiary of this studio, and recent hits from them include The Smurfs (2021-) and Belfort and Lupin (2025-).
