Ron owns a Kubota L3830 with an LA723 loader, he's adding a third-function valve, and he wants to know if a skid steer-style hydraulic post auger can work mounted on the front loader. Today I'm answering that question in depth — and sharing a product I know personally from my years running a dealership in Southwest Missouri.

🔧 Why I'd Choose Front-Mounted Over Rear-Mounted:
I'll tell you straight — a 3-point mounted post hole digger on the back of a tractor is my least favorite attachment to hook up and use. You're constantly turning around, you lose visibility, and you give up the down pressure advantage that a front loader provides. A front-mounted hydraulic auger lets you see exactly what you're doing, work more safely, and use your loader's lift cylinders to apply serious down pressure when you hit tough ground. It's just a better way to work.
🪨 What About Rocky Ground?
Living in Southwest Missouri, I deal with rocks constantly. Keith and I talk through what that means for auger selection — because the same drive that flies through sandy loam might struggle when you hit cobblestone or limestone. Tooth selection matters a lot here, and in really tough conditions, you may need to step up to Beltec's bullet series rock bits. Down pressure becomes even more critical in rock — without enough of it, you'll just be bouncing on the surface instead of drilling through it.
⚠️ A Few Things to Sort Out Before You Buy:
You'll need rear hydraulic remotes or a third-function valve to supply flow to the front — just like Ron is already planning
Match your auger size to your drive's capacity — the LC150 tops out at an 18-inch recommendation
Watch your hydraulic fluid temps, especially when it's hot outside
Check your auger teeth regularly — worn teeth kill performance fast
