In this video, I answer a viewer letter from Bob, who asked a simple question: does adding a canopy to a tractor make the engine and PTO noise any louder? To find out, I downloaded a decibel meter to my phone and ran a real-world sound test at idle and again at PTO rated engine speed, both with and without my Rhinohide removable canopy installed. But this video is about a lot more than one test. I'm also sharing something personal — the hearing loss I'm living with today because I didn't take noise danger seriously when I was younger, and what I wish I'd done differently before it was too late.
🔊 THE 85 DECIBEL DANGER ZONE
Many tractor and equipment operators have no idea how close they are to permanent hearing damage every single day. I break down the simple 85-decibel rule of thumb — if you have to raise your voice to talk to someone three feet away, you're probably already there — and explain how the math works against you the louder and longer you're exposed. Bush hogging, mowing, running a zero-turn, a chainsaw, or a leaf blower for hours at a time can all push you well past the safe threshold, and the damage adds up whether you notice it in the moment or not.
🧪 THE CANOPY NOISE TEST: RESULTS
Using my New Holland compact tractor and a Rhinohide canopy, I tested decibel levels at idle and at PTO rated engine speed (2500 RPM) with the canopy off, then ran the exact same test with the canopy installed. I show you the actual readings side by side so you can see for yourself whether a canopy traps and reverberates engine noise back down onto the operator, or whether it makes no real difference at all.
🛡️ WHY OPEN-STATION TRACTORS AND ZERO-TURNS ARE THE BIGGEST RISK
Cab tractors generally run in the mid-60s to mid-80 decibel range, which is a lot safer than an open-station compact or utility tractor with no cab. I also cover why zero-turn mowers may be the riskiest piece of equipment on most properties, since there's nothing between you and a loud gas engine. I touch on a real study out of India, where open-station tractors are far more common, that found over half of long-term tractor operators have permanent hearing damage, often worse in one ear due to how we tend to turn and look back at an attachment while running it. 🎧 HEARING PROTECTION THAT ACTUALLY WORKS
I walk through the hearing protection options I personally use and recommend, including:
Foam-filled ear muffs (no Bluetooth, no radio, just real protection)
Foam ear plugs you twist and insert
Bluetooth and AM/FM hearing protection headsets for music while you work
Why you should always check for an NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) or SNR rating before buying, since headphones without one may not be protecting your hearing at all — and could even encourage you to crank music louder to drown out tractor noise, doing more damage, not less
