We drove deep into the Arizona desert to explore White Pocket—one of the strangest and most beautiful places we visited during our Southwest road trip.
Located near the Utah–Arizona border inside Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, White Pocket features twisted white sandstone, colourful layered rock formations, giant dragon-scale textures, natural water pockets, and incredible geology that almost makes the landscape feel unreal.
Unlike nearby The Wave, White Pocket does not require winning a difficult permit lottery. However, reaching it still involves driving deep into the backcountry on sandy roads, so a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle or guided tour is highly recommended.
During our visit, we explored the fascinating geology, learned the story behind White Pocket's name, discovered natural water pockets carved into the sandstone, and wandered through one of the most photogenic places in Arizona.
Some formations looked like melted marbleized ice cream. Others resembled giant dragon scales—or even a science fiction movie set.
Would we visit again?
Definitely.
Less crowded. Less commercial. More mysterious.
