After visiting White Pocket, our guide suggested one more stop before heading back to Kanab — the old Paria ghost townsite.
We were glad we listened.
The farther we drove into the valley, the stranger and more colorful the landscape became. Striped hills, colorful badlands, unusual rock formations, and almost no people anywhere around us.
Not much remains of the original town today. The buildings are long gone, but the cemetery and surrounding landscape still tell the story of the settlers who once tried to survive in this harsh desert environment before floods and isolation eventually forced them to leave.
What surprised us most was how quiet and atmospheric the entire area felt.
Beyond the old townsite, there are narrow canyons, colorful badlands, and remote desert landscapes stretching deep into the Paria River valley.
The whole area is free to visit and surprisingly overlooked compared to many other Southwest destinations.
Definitely worth the detour after White Pocket.
