We’re planting a million native plants for Penlink O Mahurangi

Description

As Penlink O Mahurangi in north Auckland continues to grow between State Highway 1 and Whangaparāoa, so too do the native plants selected for this new highway and local parks and reserves. This planting helps offset some of the unavoidable ecological impacts of a project of this size and is a requirement of resource consent.

In total, 1.2 million native trees and plants will be planted - 600,000 alongside the highway and 550,000 in nearby parks and reserves. These areas, known as offset mitigation sites, have been chosen to maximise ecological connectivity, restore degraded habitats, improve biodiversity, and support resilient native ecosystems into the future. Sites include Long Bay Regional Park, Archer’s Block, Shakespear Regional Park, Green Road Park, and Te Rau Pūriri (South Head).

In this video, you’ll meet the team overseeing planting across these locations. The work not only supports the new road but also enhances shared public spaces for Aucklanders to enjoy.
