Description
Happy birthday Auckland Harbour Bridge! The bridge is 67 years young today – it officially opened back on 30 May 1959.
The bridge immediately changed our city and today is still at the core of how we live, work, and travel.
Once the bridge opened it became one of the busiest transport routes in the country, and has witnessed Auckland grow – going from carrying just 16,000 vehicles every day in the 1960s to around 170,000 every day now.
It’s not just a bridge for Auckland – it’s also vital infrastructure for all of New Zealand. It’s important for freight and the country’s economy, such as getting goods and services to people across the North Island, which flows on to the entire country.
It’s our job to keep the bridge safe and reliable for everyone. We check the bridge every day to ensure the Harbour Bridge is here with us, serving all of us for years to come.
Happy birthday to you Auckland Harbour Bridge – you’re a landmark in our history and a crucial part of our future, and we couldn’t do it without you.
