I went back to Facebook Marketplace and bought a found another "crusty" rescue sight unseen. This time, it’s a vintage " late model " 1970 VW Beetle that’s been sitting in a yard for years. In this video, we’re winching it onto the trailer and bringing it home to see if this "good deal" was actually a diamond in the rough or a total bust.
Once we got it home and really started looking, the reality set in. From 10 feet away, it looks like a solid classic VW, but once you get underneath, it’s a different story. The left front heater channel has a massive "shark bite" of rust and right front is full of death foam.
In this episode:
* The Rescue: Using the winch to drag this abandoned Volkswagen out of its long-term parking spot.
*The Inspection: Discovering the extent of the rust damage, including that "shark bite" heater channel.
*The Mechanicals: a mysterious 1200 cc engine was installed? Prepping for a future "Will It Run" attempt.
* Mustie1 stops by and walks some of my property in search of a new project for his channel.
Is a rotted heater channel a dealbreaker, or is a cheap Beetle always worth the save? I’m determined to see if we can get this air-cooled engine firing again before we worry about the structural metal work.
Let me know in the comments: On a scale of 1-10, was this yard find a good deal?
