Blue Oyster Cult's "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is a interesting song. It was never technically a hit unto itself. Despite that, "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" has prestige in both music history and culture. The song was a collaboration between BOC member Eric Bloom and author Michael Moorcock. Bloom was actually a fan of Moorcock, his "Elric" series specifically. "Veteran" was the sibling to other songs written by Moorcock, but edited by Bloom for the band: "Black Blade" and "The Great Sun Jester". All these songs partook in Moorcock's well know critical view towards the darkness of the human condition. They fatally mixed Fantasy with Science Fiction, a pulp mixture Blue Oyster Cult often drank from. "Veteran" would become a potent sip. Others like Metallica, Ayreon, and Tarot have all taken a drink from the cup of madness that is the song. The song's complicated.
"Veteran of the Psychic Wars" main break into the consciousness of popular culture would be the movie "Heavy Metal" (1981). An animated film that Moorcock actually had a few of his own links to. He had no idea the song would be used in it. Ironically, all the other Blue Oyster Cult songs intended for the film such as "Heavy Metal: The Black and Silver", "Vengeance (The Pact)," and "Sole Survivor" were dropped in favor of featuring "Veteran". "Veteran" would be injected deep into the animus of culture. The song and lyrics often resurface across the time. The lyrics are provocative. It is no surprise Blue Oyster Cult turned the song into a sort of hymn from the future filled with guitar solos and synths.
So is "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" truly heavy metal? Or is it the rocky future? Folk gone by?
