One time Blue Öyster Cult made a song about a certain monster.

Godzilla! No introduction needed. That is why Buck Dharma of the Cult wrote the most culturally influential (English) song about the Japanese kaiju. Godzilla has always been the United States' favorite Japanese import, but, accidentally, the Cult gave him an anthem for rock radio. This song, like Godzilla and other monsters, has since refused to die. It is a nuclear cultural hit. Legend (and Billy Corgan) has it that Buck's atomic riff for the song went on to influence Nirvana. "Godzilla" (the song) is one of the godfathers of modern heavy metal music. The song though has had a very complicated, city smashing history since. It was a song made for the movies that took nearly fifty years to reach the big screen.
"Godzilla" (the song) though has always been more of an American phenomenon than a Japanese one. It is not surprising. The song was not even technically a standout hit when released in 1977. It was a slow moving cultural juggernaut, but has always had issues crossing the Pacific on the charts. There too have been the odd legal complications that surround Godzilla and Toho. It was not like the Cult got permission from Toho in Japan when they first started performing "Godzilla," but the issues surrounding the use of Godzilla's image by the bad are a little stranger, a little more mechanical, a little more Mechagodzilla.... They say he's got to go!
Just like the movies, "Godzilla" has many eras, versions, and identities.
