USA population by Ancestry 1820 - 2026

Description

From 1820 to 2026, U.S. ancestral origins shifted from a mainly Western European settler base to one of the most diverse populations in the world. In the early 1800s, most Americans were descended from English, Scottish, Irish, Dutch, French, and German settlers, with enslaved Africans forming a growing African-American population in the South. During the 19th century, large waves of immigration reshaped the country, especially Irish and German migrants in the mid-1800s and later Southern and Eastern Europeans (Italians, Poles, Russians, and others) in the late 1800s and early 1900s. At the same time, Native American populations declined sharply due to displacement and disease but persisted across many regions. In the 20th century, the Great Migration transformed African-American demographics, while new immigration laws and later reforms (especially after 1965) opened the door to increased immigration from Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean. From the late 1900s to 2026, the U.S. became increasingly multi-ethnic and multi-racial, with no single ancestry dominating, and a growing number of people identifying as mixed heritage or reporting multiple ancestries in census data.
