Description
In the 1950s, early pioneers like Dairy Queen and McDonald's led the expansion of modern fast food through franchising. During the 1960s and 1970s, KFC, Burger King, and Pizza Hut spread rapidly across the United States and overseas. By the 1990s and 2000s, Subway experienced explosive growth, becoming the world's largest fast-food chain by number of locations for many years. In the 2010s, Starbucks expanded into a global coffee powerhouse, while McDonald's remained the industry leader in sales and brand recognition. By 2026, China's Mixue Ice Cream & Tea had become the largest food-service chain by store count, reflecting the shift of global fast-food growth toward Asia, while McDonald's, Subway, Starbucks, and KFC continued to operate tens of thousands of restaurants worldwide
