Nuclear was negligible in 1960 (well below 1%) as commercial nuclear generation was only beginning; it rose to around 1% by 1970, about 3% by 1975, and roughly 8% by 1980 as countries rapidly built reactors after the oil crises. Growth continued through the 1980s, reaching around 15–17% by the mid-1980s, where it remained near its historical peak; after Chernobyl in 1986, slower construction, plant retirements and rising fossil-fuel and later renewable generation caused its share to gradually decline, falling to around 14% in 1990, 12% in 2000, 13–14% in 2005, and about 11% in 2010. Following Fukushima in 2011, nuclear's global share declined further to roughly 10% in the mid-2010s and around 9% by 2020–2024; in 2024 nuclear supplied about 9% of global electricity, according to the IEA. For 2025, current datasets put the global share at approximately 9%, while IAEA data show more than 2,633 TWh of nuclear generation from operating reactors. For 2026, a reasonable estimate is still around 9%, since global nuclear generation is increasing but total electricity generation is also growing rapidly. Overall, nuclear went from virtually zero in 1960 to a peak of roughly 17% of global electricity in the late 1980s, before settling at around 9% today.
