The Solar Energy Race from 1980 - 2026

Stats Media Video 10 days ago

Description

In the early 1980s solar energy contributed almost nothing to the world's electricity supply, accounting for well under 0.1% of the global electricity mix because solar panels were expensive and installed only in small applications. During the 2000s, falling costs and government incentives helped solar begin expanding, though its share remained below 1%. Growth accelerated dramatically in the 2010s as countries such as China, the United States, Germany, India, and Japan rapidly deployed large-scale solar farms and rooftop systems. By 2024, solar PV generated about 7% of global electricity, and by 2025 it had risen to roughly 9%, making it the world's fastest-growing source of new electricity generation. By 2026, solar has become a major pillar of the global power system, supplying around 10% of the world's electricity and continuing to gain market share as costs decline, battery storage expands, and nations shift toward cleaner energy sources.
