US networks projected Democratic majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate, with the party flipping key seats in traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Kansas and South Carolina.
The results come amid growing voter frustration over rising living costs, tariffs and the US-Iran war, which has pushed fuel prices higher.
Among the biggest surprises, Democrat Annie Andrews won South Carolina’s Senate race, while former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in US history, according to the reported results.
Exit polls showed 70% of voters wanted Congress to provide stronger checks and balances on the president.
The projected Democratic takeover could significantly limit Trump’s legislative agenda and open the door to congressional investigations during his final two years in office.
