Description

The worlds largest steam locomotive - Union Pacific "Big Boy" #4014 - traveled south from Cheyenne Wyoming to Denver Colorado on September 30th - the second trip of 2025 for the Big Boy.

For this trip, the locomotive had a set of smoke deflectors (or wind wings as Union Pacific called them) installed. While a well known feature on 4-8-4 #844, only 1 Big Boy locomotive had them in regular service: #4019 for a very short time as part of a test.

After getting the clear signal on the west end of the Cheyenne yard, engineer Ed Dickens accelerates the huge 4-8-8-4 up Track 4 towards Speer, WY. Next we see the locomotive coasting downgrade through Nunn, CO. Finally we see the fireman sanding the flues (cleaning the carbon build up off the inside of the boiler tubes) as the locomotive accelerates out of a slow order at La Salle, CO.
