I originally thought this insect was a beneficial ladybug, but many of you took the time to explain that it was actually a squash lady beetle—one of the few lady beetles that feeds on squash-family plants instead of garden pests.
Because of your comments, I learned the difference between beneficial lady beetles and squash lady beetles, what causes skeletonized leaves, and what to look for underneath my squash leaves.
One thing about this page is that I’m documenting my first year of gardening exactly as it happens. Sometimes I’ll get it right, and sometimes I’ll get it wrong. But every mistake becomes a lesson, and every question gives us an opportunity to learn together.
