The Talk
To truly understand where the #castesystem came from, we have to look at what ancient texts said alongside real economic and political changes happening in early India, especially in the region of Aryavarta in northern India. When we do this, it becomes clear that many popular myths about caste are wrong. It did not start with religious ideas about purity and pollution, or racial differences or food habits, or tribal or Harappan practices. What lies at its heart is an explicit alliance between ruling power and priestly power and its trajectory was shaped by changing political and economic circumstances. That caste will ultimately dominate the Indian subcontinental culture was not always a given either. At many historical turning points, it looked like the system would fade away. But it gained new life around the middle of the first millennium CE.
Tony Joseph
#tonyjoseph has been a long-time editor and writer and is the author of 'Early Indians', a critically acclaimed, award-winning best seller on the population formation of India. It has been translated into six languages and a children's edition of the book was released recently. 'Early Indians’ drew on genetics, archaeology, and linguistics to rethink the subcontinent’s past. It challenges long-held myths and encourages readers to question assumptions, engage with evidence, and understand India’s deep, complex human story. He is currently working on a sequel that will focus on India's cultural formation. As part of his work on the sequel, he gave a special lecture on 'Homo Opportunisticus: The Contingent, Contested Evolution of Caste' at the annual session of the Indian History Congress in December last year.
