What is the Evidence on Migration from Bangladesh | Rammanohar Reddy

The Talk

An important part of popular and political discourse in contemporary India is the belief that a very large number of undocumented migrants from Bangladesh have entered the country. This view has built up over the years and has now become a central part of electoral campaigns, as witnessed recently in West Bengal. It is also believed to underlie the motivation for the SIR process being carried out in different parts of the country. More recently, a high-level committee has been constituted by the Union Government to examine what is described as the “changing demography” of Eastern India and suggest measures to address the issue.

This talk will examine whether there is any evidence of large-scale immigration from Bangladesh into Eastern India, and what may underlie the motivation to flag undocumented migration, where it exists, as an issue of major concern.

Rammanohar Reddy

Rammanohar Reddy has been the Editor of The India Forum, a digital publication of commentary and analysis, since its founding in 2019. An economist by training, he has been a journalist since the 1980s, having worked with Deccan Herald and The Hindu. He later served as Editor of Economic and Political Weekly, Mumbai, between 2004 and 2016. He was also Readers’ Editor at Scroll.in between 2016 and 2018.
