Description
The Forgotten Railway of Jamaica
Long before cars filled the roads, Jamaica was home to one of the first railways in the Caribbean. In 1845, the iron tracks stretched across the island, carrying sugar, rum, and passengers between towns. The first line ran from Kingston to Spanish Town, and people gathered in amazement to watch the smoking iron engine thunder past.
But old storytellers say the railway carried more than just people and cargo.
On certain misty nights, villagers near the old tracks claim they still hear the distant whistle of a train that no longer runs. The sound echoes through the dark hills and cane fields, even though the tracks have long been silent.
Some believe it is the spirit of the island’s first railway—forever traveling the same path it carved through Jamaica’s history. Others say the ghosts of workers who built the railway still ride the midnight train, guarding the iron road that once changed the island forever.
And if you ever stand near the forgotten rails and hear a whistle in the distance…
you might just be hearing Jamaica’s ghost train passing through the night.
