Long ago in the warm hills of the Caribbean, where the trade winds whispered through sugarcane and the sea glittered like glass, there lived a tiny, clever cockroach named La Cucarachita Martina.
One bright morning, Martina was sweeping the dusty yard outside her little wooden house when she found a shiny silver coin lying in the dirt. She held it up to the sun, and it flashed like treasure.
“With this,” she said softly, “I will make myself the prettiest bride in all the islands.”
She went to the market and bought a delicate ribbon, tying it between her antennae. When she returned home, she sat by her window and sang sweetly, her voice floating down the road:
“I am looking for a husband. But tell me first—
When you are angry, what sound do you make?”
