Long ago in the eastern hills of Cuba, near the village of Yara, people whispered about a strange glowing light that floated through the forests at night. They called it La Luz de Yara — The Light of Yara.
The elders warned travelers never to follow it.
According to legend, the light first appeared after a brutal massacre during the Spanish conquest. Indigenous villagers who tried to escape into the mountains vanished without a trace. Soon after, hunters began seeing a blue flame drifting between the trees, silent as death itself.
One rainy evening, a young farmer ignored the warnings. While walking home after dark, he spotted the glowing light hovering above the muddy path. It flickered gently, almost like a lantern guiding him home. Curious, he followed it deeper into the forest.
The farther he walked, the colder the air became.
The crickets stopped singing. The wind died completely.
Then the light suddenly darted ahead, weaving between the trees like it wanted him to chase it. The farmer ran after it until he reached the edge of a deep ravine hidden by vines and fog. Just before stepping forward, he heard a whisper behind him:
“Go back…”
He turned around, but nobody was there.
When he looked back, the glowing light had changed. No longer soft and blue, it burned red like fire, floating over the ravine. From below came the faint sounds of crying voices.
Terrified, the farmer fled home. By sunrise, he was found trembling outside the village church, unable to speak for three days.
To this day, many in rural Cuba claim La Luz de Yara still appears on stormy nights — sometimes blue, sometimes red — leading the lost, the greedy, and the foolish into the darkness of the hills, where some are never seen again.
