The best way to learn sweep picking is to isolate your hands, master a basic 3-string arpeggio shape, and "push through" the strings in a single, fluid motion.
Sounds easy enough, but since the goal is to sweep (rake) the motion and to avoid lifting or pausing the pick after every strike, the technique can be a challenge to master.
Practice the studies in this lesson and allow sweep technique to naturally happen over time. The trick is in how fluid the pick drop is onto the next string. The more fluid your pick drop – the better.
As a technique, sweep picking only works if you sound like you are playing a single melodic line, and not a strummed chord.
This lesson will focus on developing your first sweep idea. We’ll start with a simple Minor triad across a 3-string shape. The concept is centered upon a small 3-string idea to build your muscle memory.
Sweep picking relies exclusively on having perfect string and note tracking, (left & right hand). That is why it is important to study the lesson examples with a metronome and to build both speed and perfection.
