The Mixolydian mode is very important for a guitarist to study because it is a core building block for rock, blues, funk, and jazz.
In theory, Mixolydian is a major scale with a flat seventh note (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, b7). The lowered 7th gives it a bluesy, relaxed, and dominant sound.
In this lesson we’ll learn how Mixolydian fits perfectly over dominant 7th chords (A7 and D7). These dominant chord show up constantly in many styles, so coverage of them is paramount.
The lesson examples stress how the major scale is just lowering the seventh note by one half-step. Famous bands use it heavily, from classic rock tracks like The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" to melodic grooves found in Funk, Soul and Jazz.
