One of the more memorable sounds for a guitar melody will happen when consecutive notes move alongside a parallel or counter-moving harmony line.

These lines will progress sequentially up or down the scale using adjacent scale steps. This lesson breaks down how to start practicing and using step-wise harmony with 2-note chords (dyads).

This practice will involve playing scale tones along one string while tracking into the same scale along another adjacent string.

The result is a 2-note scale that matches step-by-step using one fixed interval (the lesson applies 3rd intervals).

We will begin with the “C” Major Scale performed on the 2nd and 1st strings. After that, we’ll create a matched scale line with 2-note chords on the 3rd and 2nd strings.

The lesson wraps up with a key of “C” solo that ties everything together in a melodic line played over two “Ma 7” chords.
