Balangir district in Odisha has a rich and diverse Adivasi (indigenous) population, with the Kandhas representing the largest tribal group in the area. Other prominent tribes residing in the region include the Gand, Binjhal, Sanra etc.These communities predominantly inhabit blocks such as Titilagarh, Saintala, and Bangomunda, where they maintain a deep connection to the local forests and agricultural lands. The culture of Balangir's tribal communities is defined by unique customs, sustainable livelihoods, and deep-rooted traditions. Many groups rely on minor forest produce and daily wage labor for survival. The Adivasi communities in Balangir frequently face socio-economic challenges. Many are landless and have been historically vulnerable to exploitation and distress migration to other states for work. Many schemes are being implemented for the Adivasis regarding education, health, livelihood, social security, but they are not being implemented properly. In the education sector, the Anewesha yojana has been stopped. Where many tribal students are not getting education.The Anewsa yojana is an Odiaha government initiative that provide free residential education in top English medium schools to children from st an sc communities.
