Every summer, the Gujjar-Bakarwals of Jammu and Kashmir begin their seasonal migration to the high-altitude meadows of Bandipora and Gurez, carrying forward a centuries-old nomadic tradition. But their journey is increasingly being slowed by restrictions and a lengthy permission process, adding to the hardships they already face, including poor access to education, healthcare, and the physical strain of traveling with their livestock.
