The axis of pop and rock guitar revolves around the I-V-vi-IV progression. Among thousands of hit songs built on this framework, "Let It Be" by The Beatles, and "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey are widely considered as the most iconic and frequently played.

These four simple chords are the backbone of Western popular music because their mathematical sequence creates a universally pleasing, cyclical loop.

In this lesson we’ll establish the riff in “E” Major, (the same key as Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”). Our main focus in this lesson will be how to establish melody lines using the “E” Major scale.

Both Major Pentatonic and Basic Major Scale will be shown along the neck with simple soloing patterns and easy to play melody line examples. Notation for an improvised guitar solo is also included.
