Description
Michael Mann, the legendary director behind *Heat* and *Collateral*, reportedly shot himself in the leg while handling a firearm at a Los Angeles shooting range.
Yes. THAT Michael Mann.
The filmmaker whose movies are famous for some of the most realistic gun handling and shooting sequences in Hollywood.
According to reports, the firearm discharged while Mann was holstering it.
Thankfully, his injury was minor, and he was treated and released from the hospital.
But there's one word being used throughout the reporting that I want to talk about.
**ACCIDENTAL.**
Police reportedly classified the incident as accidental, meaning the shooting wasn't intentional.
But in the firearms community, there's an important distinction between an accidental discharge and a negligent discharge.
We don't yet know exactly what caused Mann's pistol to fire.
And that's why this incident deserves a closer look rather than speculation.
In this video, I discuss why reholstering can be one of the most overlooked moments in firearm handling, why decades of experience don't eliminate human error, and what every gun owner can learn from this situation.
I also explain why I have tremendous respect for Michael Mann and the attention to firearms realism he's brought to Hollywood.
Because no matter how experienced you are, the fundamentals never stop mattering.
**Do you think most negligent discharges happen because of inexperience, or because experienced shooters become too comfortable?**
