Montgomery County, Maryland just voted to ban concealed carry in parks, places of worship, and government buildings.
And one of the councilmembers supporting it said the quiet part backwards:
If you’re law-abiding, this won’t impact you at all.
That is the entire problem.
The law-abiding are the only people it impacts.
The guy walking into a park to rob somebody does not care that the county council passed a new ordinance. He is already carrying a gun he is not allowed to have, into a place he is not allowed to have it, to commit a crime that was already illegal before this vote ever happened.
Adding one more charge does not disarm him.
It disarms the person who read the law and followed it.
And the wildest part is one councilmember who voted against the bill accidentally explained exactly why this law falls apart.
She asked how police would even know someone was carrying a concealed weapon unless they stopped and frisked them.
That is the question.
Because concealed means concealed.
Either this law does nothing, or enforcement requires officers to start putting hands on people based on suspicion.
So now Montgomery County has created a Second Amendment problem and a Fourth Amendment problem at the same time.
You cannot say you are worried about people being stopped and frisked without cause while also supporting the law that creates the excuse to stop them.
The Constitution is not an à la carte menu.
You do not get to protect the Fourth Amendment while gutting the Second.
Same document.
Same people.
Same protection.
And this is not even Montgomery County’s first loss on this issue. Maryland’s highest court already struck down the county’s broader carry restriction earlier this year, so the council came back with a shorter list and the same basic idea.
Get told no by the court.
Trim the edges.
Run it again.
The result is simple:
The only person guaranteed to be unarmed in that park, church, or government building is the person who follows the rules.
The criminal ignores the sign.
The law-abiding citizen obeys it.
And that is how gun control works almost every time.
