Learning to add non-diatonic tones during a melody line or a solo is highly recommended for guitarists.

Performing phrases that include non-diatonic sound is typically referred to as playing, “outside” the harmony. It works by unlocking a number of advanced musical directions.

Playing “outside” also introduces richer chord voicings, smoother voice leading and it also allows players to build tension.

In this lesson we’ll learn which non-diatonic tones to focus on first. The outside tones we add will work to add tension and then release it in the music so that you elevate the phrasing of both solos and melodic ideas used within the songs you compose.
