Most guitarists study how to play solos by learning random licks that have nothing to do with chords. A better way to learn about soloing is to play into the notes of a specific chord harmony.
We can do this the hard way, by focusing on scale tones, mapping out arpeggios across the fretboard, and using voice leading to connect phrases smoothly as the backing chords change.
An easier way to do this is by placing our focus primarily on the guide tones (the Root, 3rd, 5th and 7th degrees of each chord). Guide tones define whether a chord is major, minor, or dominant, making them the strongest notes to highlight in a lick.
This lesson will use licks that target into a chord harmony by focusing on the guide tones of each measure. Every chord will have a lick assigned to it and those licks will highlight the guide tones
