There is one group of chords that’s referred to as the “bread and butter” of jazz and it’s called the “ii-V-I progression.” It’s known as the foundation of functional harmony - vital for musicians to learn because it teaches many important skills.
Once developed, the “ii-V-I” teaches how to “make the changes” by connecting smooth, voice-led melodies across chord tones.
Additionally, it unlocks the fret-board by forcing guitarists to master arpeggios, scales, and chord inversions across all 12 keys.
This lesson breaks down the two tonalities (Major & Minor) used across the ii-V-I. Chord shapes, chord color and melodic direction are all explained in detail.
