Even though the 3 chords we are going to learn about today are often called the "bread and butter" of jazz it will frequently show up in pop, R&B, bossa nova, and country music as a beautiful, colorful alternative to the standard I-IV-V progression.
This lesson will study the applied use of several popular scales that can be used to compose melody over both Major and Minor “ii-V-I” progressions.
In styles like blues or rock, we often get away with playing a single scale (like minor pentatonic) over all the chords. When using the chords in a “ii-V-I,” the harmony changes rapidly.
This requires us to play "through" the changes rather than just over them. Learning to improvise over this progression with the appropriate scales will force a person to outline the specific harmony of the exact chord being played, vastly improving your ear and your melodic phrasing.
