Description

Step inside an 1885 Italianate townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side with Amanda Schachter and Alexander Levy, principals of SLO Architecture, whose thoughtful renovation balances historic preservation with contemporary living. Designed for clients with an extensive collection of contemporary art, the home embraces original architectural character while introducing carefully considered details that support the rhythms of daily life.

The tour begins in the formal living room, where restored crown molding inspired by a medieval Bactrian drape motif reflects the homeowners' collection of Pakistani, Indian, and Persian art. A custom fireplace pairs a white marble surround with a black granite base, creating a refined interpretation of the traditional Upper East Side townhouse fireplace. Moreover, brand new windows, designed to meet the requirements of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, fill the room with warm natural light while helping protect the artwork.

The adjoining dining room continues the dialogue between history and modern craftsmanship. Matching architectural details, a companion black marble fireplace, and a concealed door tucked seamlessly into the millwork to help create a space that exudes elegance. This is also where family and friends gather around meals prepared in the nearby serving pantry, all while surrounded by art and craftsmanship.

Upstairs, the private level introduces another subtle design gesture. Instead of placing rugs across the wood floors, Slow Architecture created custom stencil patterns that echo the texture and weave of textiles. Morning light drifts across the painted surface, bringing quiet depth to the bedrooms while maintaining the clean, open character of each room.

The tour concludes on the family floor, where a steel blue lacquer kitchen opens effortlessly to the outdoor terrace. A large pass through window creates an easy connection between cooking and dining outside, while views across Manhattan provide a striking backdrop for everyday meals and family barbecues. The result is a home that feels equally suited to entertaining, quiet mornings, and life surrounded by art.

Throughout the renovation, Amanda and Alexander demonstrate how patient restoration, meaningful collaboration, and thoughtful design can honor the past while creating a home that feels unique, vibrant, and personal. Watch the full tour and discover how SLO Architecture transformed this historic Upper East Side townhouse into a modern residence designed to be as beautiful as it is functional.
