Description

In this Open House tour, Carlos Saavedra of ECKSTRØM introduces 487 Henry Street: a reimagined 19th century Brooklyn townhouse located right in the heart of Cobble Hill.

The renovation project's goal was to preserve the home's historic street presence while upgrading and expanding the interior for contemporary living. A sculptural mahogany staircase winds through the center of the house beneath a skylight, bringing natural light deep into every level and setting the tone for the spaces that follow. On the parlor floor, an original wood burning fireplace remains at the heart of the home, now framed by a custom travertine mantel. Warm materials, layered textures, and muted tones create an atmosphere that feels both inviting and relaxed. Toward the rear, the house opens dramatically into a double height kitchen and dining area surrounded by expansive windows overlooking the garden. Additionally, the design draws inspiration from a 130-year-old American elm tree in the backyard, with wood rich materials, walnut detailing, and Brazilian quartzite surfaces that echo the colors and textures of the landscape outside. Throughout the home, specific architectural elements connect from room to room, including a kitchen hood that mirrors the form of the fireplace below, that allows for a sense of flow and continuity.

As for the second floor? It accommodates three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a relaxing seating area, allowing the entire top level to become a dedicated primary suite. Complete with a wet bar, private terrace, and serene bedroom spaces, the suite offers a quiet retreat above the city. The tour concludes on a private roof deck with sweeping views stretching from Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan.
