Step inside a Williamsburg loft designed by Koray Duman of Büro Koray Duman Architects, that was a former shoe factory before it was converted into a home filled with books, structure, and natural light.
The apartment sits within approximately 1,200 square feet, where the original industrial framework remains visible. Exposed columns are left in place at the entry, immediately grounding the space in the building’s history. A perforated stainless steel ceiling runs overhead, concealing mechanical systems while keeping the surface visually light. From the entry forward, angled lines appear throughout the layout, repeating in small but consistent ways across cabinetry, shelving, and custom elements. Meanwhile, numerous books line the perimeter of the apartment. Instead of being placed in a single storage wall, they wrap around the rooms, following the architecture. The shelves are slightly rotated, which softens their presence and breaks up the density of the collection.
Next up: the kitchen is integrated into the open living space with stainless steel surfaces and simple, continuous detailing. A large island is fitted precisely between the existing structural columns, shaping the space around what already exists rather than replacing it. Light moves through the living and dining areas without interruption. Shelving shifts around windows and circulation paths, creating built-in moments that double as seating and storage, including a small window bench carved into the perimeter. The dining area, once a separate room, now sits within the open plan. It is framed by shelving that holds hundreds of cookbooks. A green marble table sits at the center, aligned with the surrounding furniture and lighting. In the bedroom, the shelving continues at a smaller scale, wrapping around the bed and extending into built-ins along the walls. Exposed beams remain visible overhead, keeping the structure present even in the most private part of the home.
And at the very end? The view opens back toward the main living space, where books, light, and structure all meet again in one continuous line throughout this lovely residence.
