The secret to creating cinematic portraits is to remember one thing… You’re creating a scene, not lighting a person. The practical upshot of that for photographers is cinematic portraits offer huge scope to be creative with color, contrast and context.
For this cinematic look photographer Gavin Hoey draws upon a futuristic, cyberpunk theme. But with limited space and no budget to build a real set, Gavin recycles so old props and relies upon the power of light to create the mood.
Starting with a single flash, Gavin lights his model with a strong cyan color. To balance that he adds a second flash to the side, with a punchy orange gel, and completes the scene with a red gelled speedlight to illuminate the background.
But how do you turn a studio portrait into a cinematic portrait? In this case Gavin uses to things. First he creates a fake wet window effect using a sheet of clear acrylic sprayed with a mix of water and glycerine. Finally Gavin achieves a “low-fi” hazy edge effect, in camera, by recycling a clear plastic bag into a center spot clear lens filter.
