Synopsis:
Hidden within the rapidly disappearing tropical forests of Bangladesh lives one of Asia's most remarkable primates: the western hoolock gibbon. Known for their extraordinary agility, lifelong pair bonds and haunting calls that echo through the treetops, these endangered apes face an uncertain future.
Once widespread throughout Bangladesh, hoolock gibbons have suffered devastating population declines as their forests are cleared for agriculture, timber, plantations and expanding human settlements. At the time of filming, researchers warned that fewer than 300 individuals might remain in the country.
Led by primatologist Dr. Elliot Haimoff, this powerful wildlife documentary explores the fragile existence of these extraordinary animals and the growing struggle to protect their last remaining habitats.
Travel into Bangladesh's threatened rainforests, including Lawachara National Park, where scientists, conservationists and local communities confront the consequences of habitat destruction, illegal logging and increasing pressure on the natural environment.
Through remarkable wildlife footage, scientific research and firsthand accounts, the documentary reveals the essential role gibbons play in maintaining healthy forests, particularly through seed dispersal and natural regeneration.
But can conservation efforts, environmental awareness and cooperation between governments, communities and international organizations reverse decades of destruction?
Hoolock Gibbons: Grasping the Last Branch is an urgent story of wildlife conservation, biodiversity and the fight to prevent extinction. It reminds us that saving a single endangered species can also mean protecting an entire ecosystem.
