► This episode of the Lecturio Podcast dives deep into the Hepatitis A Virus (HAV), a highly resilient pathogen known for its fecal-oral transmission. We explore its unique structure as a non-enveloped picornavirus, which allows it to survive harsh environments, including stomach acid and freezing temperatures. Unlike other forms of hepatitis, HAV causes an acute, self-limiting infection rather than a chronic one.

🧬 Virus Characteristics: A small, single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus that is incredibly tough due to its lack of an envelope.
🧼 Transmission & Prevention: Primarily spreads through contaminated food and water; preventable through vaccination, handwashing, and proper sanitation.
🌡️ Symptoms: Initially presents with flu-like symptoms followed by a second wave of jaundice, dark urine, and pale stools.
🛡️ Immune Response: Liver damage is not caused directly by the virus but by the body’s own immune-mediated attack on infected cells.
🧪 Diagnosis & Care: Diagnosed via IgM antibody testing and managed with supportive care, as most patients recover fully within months with lifelong immunity.
