Hardest Hole to Drill: Perfect Drill in a Piece of Wooden Dowel

Woodworking with DIY tools Guide 9 months ago

Description

Drilling a hole from side to side in a piece of wooden dowel isn't easy, I can tell you right away. Not even with a professional drill press like the one I have. And even using some woodworking tricks that helped me in previous videos, I couldn't get the hole centered on all the small wooden dowels. This wood has hard and soft grains, which causes the drill bit to deviate at the entrance, avoiding the hard grains and trying to drill following the soft ones. So, neither the dowel guide nor a dowel stand I made specifically for this workpiece work. But I discovered that if I mark the center of the dowels at both ends, carefully and precisely center-punch them, and then eyeball a pre-drill that's well-centered on the ends, I can now drill perfect holes in all the work pieces one after the other.
