Description
Supermarkets in several European countries have reported cyberattacks targeting internet-connected refrigeration systems, with temperatures reportedly pushed as high as 50°C, leaving chilled and frozen products unsafe for sale.
Among those affected were 23 ICA stores in Sweden and 15 Carrefour stores in Belgium, according to Reuters.
Unlike traditional cyberattacks targeting personal data, these incidents disrupted physical equipment, causing food waste, financial losses and operational problems.
Retailers are now updating security systems and restricting remote access to prevent further attacks.
The hackers' identities remain unknown, with investigations continuing across Europe.
The incidents highlight a growing concern: even everyday equipment like fridges and freezers can become targets for cybercriminals.
