Three men convicted of the first-degree murders of Arnold and Joanne De Jong, an elderly couple in Abbotsford, B.C., could soon be eligible to apply for early parole after a judge ruled the law blocking it is unconstitutional.
The De Jongs were killed in their own home in 2022. The court heard the men planned the killings so the couple couldn't identify them, then stole from them afterward.
The judge has now said that denying these men the chance to apply for parole after 15 years amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.
Cruel and unusual is what Arnold and Joanne De Jong went through. Not a sentence handed to the people who did it. A couple in their own home, killed for what was taken from them, and the legal system's concern is whether the men responsible have their rights respected.
This is about victims who can't speak for themselves, a justice system that keeps putting the rights of offenders ahead of the people they harm, and a family forced to sit through it all over again.
At some point, we have to ask who this system is really built to protect.
