Description
A man convicted of murdering a young woman and nearly killing a 15-year-old girl in 1984 was attending law classes at McGill University this fall.
Jeffrey Ewert was convicted of second-degree murder and attempted murder. According to court records, he strangled and sexually assaulted a woman who died from the attack, and severely beat and strangled a 15-year-old girl, leaving her with permanent, life-altering injuries.
Women at McGill have said they don't feel safe. Students have written open letters describing concerns about his behaviour toward female classmates, and some survivors of sexual violence say they've avoided class because of his presence. A university is supposed to be a place where students can learn without fear.
Some people, including prominent lawyer Julius Grey, have argued he should be allowed to continue his studies because rehabilitation reduces reoffending. This video disagrees. When the victims of a crime are still living with it, and a student body says it doesn't feel safe, those concerns should come first.
This is about the safety of women and young people, who gets access to our institutions, and a system that keeps asking victims to accept the risk.
At some point, we have to put the safety of the community ahead of second chances for people who've shown what they're capable of.
