Description
The 42-year-old Democratic candidate and doctor announced his victory over Republican Mike Rogers, securing a key Senate seat previously held by retiring Democrat Gary Peters.
“Michigan, we did it! I am so proud and honoured to stand here as your senator-elect,” El-Sayed told supporters in Detroit.
His campaign focused on universal healthcare, tackling rising living costs and reducing the influence of money in politics, despite fierce criticism from Republican opponents.
El-Sayed is also set to become the first Democratic doctor elected to the Senate since 1969.
